Local Perspective: Capturing the Ohio River Way
At Indigo Web Services, we feel blessed to live and work in a region filled with natural beauty and architectural landmarks. We often encourage our clients to tell their stories through authentic imagery, and recently, our co-owner and photographer, Keith James, had the opportunity to share his own perspective of a local icon.
Last fall, The Ohio River Way hosted a photo contest to highlight the autumn beauty and unique character of the Ohio River corridor. Their mission—promoting recreation, education, and the conservation of our local land and water—is something we deeply admire, so Keith was honored to participate.
An Abstract View of a Familiar Landmark
We were pleasantly surprised to learn that Keith’s entry was awarded first prize in the Abstract category. The subject was the William H. Natcher Bridge, a structure many of us drive across regularly without a second thought.
By focusing on the geometry of the bridge rather than the whole structure, with the giant setting sun looming in the background, Keith’s photo offers a different way of looking at the connection between Rockport, Indiana, and Owensboro, Kentucky.
The Technical Details
For those interested in the “how” behind the image, Keith had to set up quite a distance away to achieve the abstract effect.
“The photo was taken from the Kentucky side of the Ohio River from approximately three miles away,” Keith says. “I used my Sony α7III with a Sony 200-600mm lens and a 2x teleconverter. The settings were f/13, ISO 800, 1/1000 sec.”
Home in the River Corridor
Keith and his wife, Laura, call Santa Claus, Indiana, home, so the Ohio River is a constant presence in their lives. Participating in this contest was a small way to support the “vibrant Ohio River communities” that The Ohio River Way works so hard to protect and promote.
We are grateful for the recognition from such a wonderful organization, and we look forward to continuing to capture the quiet beauty of our corner of the world.
